About This Trail
Red Trail at Sweetwater Creek State Park is the park’s best-known route, following the creek corridor toward the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company mill. The trail combines whitewater scenery, rocky natural-surface footing, forested walking, and one of metro Atlanta’s most distinctive historic outdoor settings. It is a strong choice for visitors who want a scenic hike close to the city with both natural and cultural interest.
Although the trail is not long, it can be more challenging than the mileage suggests because of rocks, roots, slopes, and slick areas near the creek. The mill ruins and rushing water are major highlights, but visitors should stay out of restricted areas and use caution around steep banks and wet surfaces. The trail is popular, so expect other hikers during weekends, holidays, and pleasant weather.
Before visiting, check state park hours, parking fees, and any trail or ruin-area restrictions. Wear shoes with traction, keep children and pets close near the creek, and stay on marked paths to protect the site and surrounding habitat.
Trail Notes
The Red Trail at Sweetwater Creek is a popular route with creek scenery, historic mill ruins, and rocky natural-surface sections. Use caution near the water, stay out of restricted ruin areas, and expect busy trail conditions at peak times.
Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
