About GeorgiaOutdoors.com

Built for Georgia Outdoors — Then and Now

GeorgiaOutdoors.com first appeared on the web in 1999. More than two decades later, the technology has changed dramatically. The reason for the site has not.

A Georgia outdoor project that started in 1999

GeorgiaOutdoors.com began as a personal project built around a simple idea: make it easier to find good places to enjoy the outdoors in Georgia. The original site covered many of the same subjects you see here today, including camping, hunting, fishing, lakes, trails, and outdoor destinations across the state.

This was the early web. There were no drag-and-drop site builders, interactive statewide maps, or modern content-management systems waiting to do the heavy lifting. The original GeorgiaOutdoors.com was hand-built line by line in HTML, ASP, and early CSS by programmers working at the founder's information-technology company.

For a number of years, the site developed a loyal audience. It was never a large media company or a tourism bureau. It was an outdoor enthusiast's project that happened to find a place on the growing web.

A good idea worth bringing back

Eventually the site became less active and the information grew dated. Years passed. But the basic idea behind GeorgiaOutdoors.com still made sense: Georgia has an extraordinary range of outdoor places, and finding the practical information needed to plan a trip can still mean searching through many different websites.

So the site has been rebuilt from the ground up for a new generation of travelers. Today's GeorgiaOutdoors.com combines detailed destination pages with a statewide Adventure Map, trip-planning information, official resource links, seasonal stories, local events, and nearby places that can turn a single stop into a full day or weekend.

The goal is still pretty simple

We want to help people get outside and enjoy Georgia — whether that means finding a campground, following a mountain trail, launching a boat, planning a hunt, fishing a new lake, visiting a small-town festival, or taking the long way home because the scenery looks promising.

We also want the new GeorgiaOutdoors.com to become more than a directory. Some of the best views in Georgia are captured by the people who are actually out there exploring. That is why we are building a community photo gallery where visitors can share photographs of the places they love.
