About This Trail
McQueen’s Island Trail is one of coastal Georgia’s signature rail-trail experiences, following the former Savannah & Atlantic Railroad corridor between Savannah and Tybee Island. The route offers salt-air scenery, expansive marsh views, tidal waters, palms, native plants, and a level trail surface that works for walking, running, and bicycling.
The trail is especially valuable because it gives visitors a car-free way to experience the coastal landscape between Fort Pulaski and the approach to Tybee. It is scenic, exposed, and shaped by weather, tides, sun, and wind. The crushed-shell and gravel surface is generally gentle, but visitors should plan for limited shade, no services along portions of the route, and changing conditions after storms or high tides.
Before visiting, check current Chatham County status and any closure notices, because coastal storms and washouts can affect this trail. Bring water, sun protection, and insect protection, and use caution near marsh edges, road crossings, and damaged or uneven sections.
Trail Notes
McQueen's Island Trail is a coastal rail-trail where storm damage, tide, sun exposure, and closure notices should be checked before visiting. Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, visitor center, city/county website, or land manager for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, traffic, wildlife activity, and restrictions before you go.
