About This Trail
Fort Pulaski Lighthouse Overlook Trail is an easy trail at Fort Pulaski National Monument, leading visitors through open marsh and forested areas toward views of the historic Cockspur Island Lighthouse. The route adds a scenic walking option to a visit focused on the fort, Civil War history, and the Savannah River estuary.
The trail is a good fit for families, history travelers, birdwatchers, and visitors heading between Savannah and Tybee Island. Along the way, the landscape shifts from fort grounds to marsh and river views, giving a better sense of Cockspur Island’s coastal setting. The lighthouse itself is viewed from a distance, but the overlook provides one of the best public vantage points.
Before visiting, check National Park Service hours, fees, trail conditions, and weather. Stay on marked routes, use caution near marsh edges and wet areas, and bring water and insect protection in warm months.
Trail Notes
Fort Pulaski Lighthouse Overlook Trail crosses marsh and forest environments to a lighthouse viewing area. Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, refuge office, visitor center, or land manager for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, wildlife activity, and restrictions before you go.
