About This Trail
Canal Diggers Trail is a longer walking option at the Okefenokee’s Folkston entrance, giving visitors a chance to experience upland and swamp-edge environments beyond the shortest boardwalk-style stops. The trail offers flat to gently varied walking through a landscape shaped by water, forest, wildlife, and the history of attempts to alter the swamp.
This route is a good fit for visitors who want more walking time while still staying within the developed refuge access area. The experience is less about elevation or overlooks and more about quiet observation: birds, insects, wetland plants, changing light, and the distinctive atmosphere of the Okefenokee. Conditions can feel hot, humid, buggy, or wet depending on season and weather.
Before visiting, check current refuge hours, trail conditions, weather, and wildlife advisories. Bring water, sun protection, and insect protection, stay on marked paths, and give all wildlife plenty of space.
Trail Notes
Canal Diggers Trail offers an Okefenokee swamp-side hiking experience where conditions can be wet, buggy, hot, and remote-feeling. Stay on the marked route, watch for wildlife from a safe distance, and bring water, sun protection, and insect protection.
Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
