About This Trail
Byron Herbert Reece Trail is a short but steep blue-blazed access trail from the Byron Herbert Reece Memorial parking area to the Appalachian Trail below Blood Mountain. Although the mileage is brief, the climb is sustained and rocky enough that visitors should treat it as a real mountain hike rather than a casual connector.
The trail is important because it provides one of the primary access routes to Blood Mountain and the Appalachian Trail in this part of North Georgia. Hikers may use it for a short out-and-back, as the start of a Blood Mountain summit hike, or as part of a longer Appalachian Trail outing. Expect heavy use during peak seasons, especially when weather is good and parking fills early.
Before visiting, check parking conditions, weather, and trail status. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and use caution on rocky footing, wet surfaces, and steeper sections of the climb.
Trail Notes
Byron Herbert Reece Trail is a short but steep connector to the Appalachian Trail below Blood Mountain, with rocky footing and a sustained climb from the parking area. Carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and be prepared for changing weather and heavier use on weekends.
Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
