About This Trail

Bartram Forest Trails offer one of Milledgeville’s best natural-surface trail systems for mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and wildlife watching. Located a few miles south of town, the forest includes three marked loop options through pines, meadows, creek crossings, pond-side scenery, wetlands, and quiet wildlife habitat. The trail system is especially useful for visitors who want more than a short greenway walk but do not need a long backcountry trip.

The marked routes give visitors clear choices by distance and challenge. The Green Loop is the beginner-friendly singletrack option at about 5.5 miles. The Blue Loop adds more mileage and intermediate riding, totaling about 7.5 miles. The Red Loop is the longest and most challenging option at about 10.3 miles, using a mix of singletrack and doubletrack for riders, runners, and hikers who want a longer route through the forest. The trails are popular with mountain bikers, but they also work well for walking and trail running when users follow shared-trail etiquette.

Bartram Forest is also a Wildlife Management Area with natural and historical interest beyond the trail mileage. The 1,343-acre property includes wetlands, wildlife habitat, educational kiosks, a pavilion, and an erosion ravine with soils connected to ancient shallow seas that once covered Georgia. Because this is a WMA, visitors should check current Georgia DNR and Georgia Forestry Commission rules before going. Gates may be opened or closed at the discretion of the Georgia Forestry Commission, hunting may be allowed in season, a Georgia land-use or other appropriate pass may be required, and camping is not allowed on the WMA.

Trail Notes

Bartram Forest is a shared hiking, trail running, and mountain biking system with WMA access considerations. Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.

Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, ranger office, refuge office, or land manager for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
