About This Trail
Big Ferry Trail is one of the longer walking routes at Skidaway Island State Park, leading through maritime forest, marsh-edge scenery, and boardwalk sections that highlight the coastal environment near Savannah. The trail is an easy route, but its length gives visitors a fuller sense of the park’s salt marshes, tidal creeks, wildlife habitat, and quiet maritime landscape.
This is a strong trail for birdwatchers, campers, families, and visitors who want a coastal hike that feels more immersive than a short boardwalk stop. Along the way, expect shaded forest, open marsh views, and observation areas where the scenery changes with tides and weather. It can be paired with Skidaway’s shorter trails for a longer day inside the park.
Before visiting, check park hours, parking fees, tide conditions, and trail status. Coastal trails can be hot, buggy, muddy, or slick depending on the season, so bring water, insect protection, and shoes that can handle damp ground.
Trail Notes
Big Ferry Trail is an easy coastal nature trail, so plan for flat walking, wildlife viewing, and changing marsh conditions. Bring water and insect protection, and use extra care on boardwalks, wet sections, or areas affected by tide and weather.
Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
