About This Trail
F.D. Roosevelt State Park is one of Georgia’s most significant hiking destinations, with a large backcountry trail network spread across Pine Mountain ridges, hardwood forest, creek valleys, and historic Civilian Conservation Corps-era park landscapes. The park is Georgia’s largest state park, and its trail system gives hikers a very different experience from the flat terrain many people expect in west-central Georgia.
The best-known route is the Pine Mountain Trail, a long backcountry hiking trail that can be explored as a challenging day hike, section hike, or overnight backpacking trip. Hikers can expect rolling elevation, rocky and rooted natural surfaces, wooded ridgelines, small waterfalls, stream crossings, and occasional long views from higher points along the ridge. The trail network is best suited for prepared hikers who are comfortable with mileage, changing terrain, and basic backcountry planning.
F.D. Roosevelt is a strong choice for visitors who want a serious Georgia hiking day outside the North Georgia mountains. Check current trail maps, campsite rules, parking fees, weather, water availability, and any closure notices before setting out, especially if planning a longer route or an overnight trip.
Trail Notes
F.D. Roosevelt State Park's backcountry trails offer longer mileage, rolling terrain, forested ridges, and a more rugged hiking experience than the park's short nature trails. Carry water, know your route, and plan for changing weather, uneven footing, and longer time on trail.
Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
