About This Trail

Fort Mountain State Park is a classic North Georgia mountain hiking destination with backcountry routes that climb through hardwood forest, mountain laurel, creek valleys, rocky terrain, and high-elevation scenery near Chatsworth and Ellijay. The park’s trail network offers everything from short nature walks to more demanding mountain hikes, making it a strong choice for visitors who want a real ridge-and-valley hiking experience.

The backcountry routes are best suited for hikers who are comfortable with natural surfaces, elevation change, and longer outings. Trails in the park can pass small waterfalls, old mining areas, forested ridges, overlook points, and rhododendron-lined creek corridors. The Gahuti Trail and other longer routes make Fort Mountain especially appealing for hikers looking for a more strenuous day than a simple park loop.

Fort Mountain can be combined with scenic drives, lake time, picnic stops, and nearby mountain towns. Before heading out, check current Georgia State Parks trail maps, parking fees, backcountry permit requirements, weather, and any temporary closures, especially if planning one of the longer loops.

Trail Notes

Fort Mountain's backcountry trails include mountain terrain, longer routes, and sections shared with other trail users. Be prepared for elevation change, natural-surface footing, remote stretches, and weather that can change quickly in the mountains.

Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.

Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
