About This Trail

The Silver Comet Trail is one of Georgia’s premier paved rail trails, stretching from the Smyrna area west toward the Alabama state line and connecting with Alabama’s Chief Ladiga Trail. Built for walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters, and families, it offers long-distance mileage as well as many shorter access-point outings for visitors who want a car-free path through northwest Georgia.

Because the trail is paved and mostly gentle, it works for a wide range of users, from casual walkers to serious cyclists planning longer rides. The experience changes by segment, with suburban access points, wooded corridors, small towns, bridges, and open stretches along the route. Visitors can choose a short out-and-back from a convenient trailhead or plan a longer point-to-point ride with food, water, and shuttle logistics.

Before visiting, choose your trailhead and distance carefully. Bring water, sun protection, and repair basics if biking, and use caution at road crossings, busy access points, and mixed-use areas where faster cyclists and slower walkers share the path.

Trail Notes

The Silver Comet Trail is a long paved rail trail shared by walkers, runners, cyclists, families, and pets. Stay to the right, pass with warning, slow down near crossings and busy trailheads, and choose a turnaround point that fits your group.

Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.

Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
