About This Trail
Dog Creek Outer Loop is an easy mixed-use trail at Don Carter State Park, offering a longer natural-surface option than the nearby inner loop. The route gives visitors a relaxed way to explore the wooded side of the park near Lake Lanier, with a setting that works for hikers, equestrians, and visitors looking for a quieter trail experience away from the busiest lakefront areas.
Because the trail is shared with horses, hikers should expect a different pace and etiquette than on a foot-traffic-only route. The outer loop can be paired with the Dog Creek Inner Loop for a longer outing, or used on its own for an easy walk through the park’s forested terrain. Conditions may be muddy or uneven after rain, especially on natural-surface sections.
Before visiting, check current state park hours, parking fees, trail-use rules, and any temporary closures. Yield to horses, keep pets controlled, stay on the marked route, and bring water if you plan to combine multiple Don Carter trails.
Trail Notes
Dog Creek Outer Loop extends the shared-use trail experience at Don Carter State Park and is used by hikers and equestrians. Yield to horses, stay alert on curves and slopes, and expect natural-surface conditions that may change after rain.
Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
