About This Trail
Fort McAllister State Park Trails give visitors a coastal Georgia hiking and biking experience beside the Ogeechee River, maritime forest, salt marsh, and one of the state’s most important Civil War earthwork fortifications. The park’s trail system includes the Red Bird Creek Trail and Magnolia Trail, offering enough mileage for a relaxed state park outing without requiring a full-day hike.
The trails are especially useful for campers, families, history travelers, birdwatchers, and visitors exploring the Richmond Hill and Savannah area. A walk here can combine natural scenery with historic interpretation, river views, and a quiet coastal environment. Because the trails are also available for biking, users should expect shared-use etiquette on some sections.
Before visiting, check current state park hours, parking fees, trail conditions, and historic site access. Bring water and insect protection, stay on marked routes, and use caution near marsh edges, water, roots, and wet surfaces.
Trail Notes
Fort McAllister trails combine maritime forest, marsh, river scenery, and historic fort context. Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, refuge office, visitor center, or land manager for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, wildlife activity, and restrictions before you go.
