About This Trail
Rock Eagle Mound Walking Trail gives visitors a short, meaningful walk around one of Georgia’s best-known prehistoric stone effigy sites. The route centers on the fenced Rock Eagle Mound, nearby interpretive features, and the observation tower area, making it a good stop for history travelers, families, and visitors exploring the Eatonton and Lake Oconee area.
This is not a long hiking destination, but it is important enough to stand on its own because of the cultural significance of the site. Visitors can walk the grounds, read interpretive materials, view the mound from designated areas, and learn about the ancient landscape of Middle Georgia. The route is best treated as a respectful heritage walk rather than a recreation-only trail.
Before visiting, check current public access, hours, and any site rules. Stay outside protected areas, do not climb on or disturb the mound, and use the visit as an opportunity to learn about the cultural history of the region.
Trail Notes
Rock Eagle is a protected cultural site, so the walking route should be treated as a respectful interpretive visit. Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, ranger office, refuge office, or land manager for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
