About This Trail
Ocmulgee Mounds Trail System gives visitors a rare combination of cultural history and outdoor walking in the heart of Macon. The National Historical Park’s trails connect ancient mound sites, wetlands, forest environments, river-area scenery, and interpretive destinations tied to thousands of years of continuous human history.
The system is especially useful for families, history travelers, birdwatchers, and casual hikers who want a meaningful trail outing without leaving Middle Georgia’s urban core. Most individual trails are short, but they can be linked together into longer loops or a fuller park visit. The experience is less about strenuous hiking and more about slowing down, learning the landscape, and moving respectfully through an important cultural site.
Before visiting, check current National Park Service hours, trail status, and any site advisories. Stay on marked paths, respect protected cultural resources, and bring water and sun protection during warm weather.
Trail Notes
Ocmulgee Mounds trails combine historical interpretation, wetlands, forest, and short linked walking routes. Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
