About This Trail
Appalachian Approach Trail is the classic route from Amicalola Falls State Park toward Springer Mountain and the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. It is more than a casual park walk: the trail is strenuous, scenic, and meaningful for hikers beginning a long-distance journey as well as day hikers who want to experience one of Georgia’s most important trail corridors.
The route begins in the Amicalola Falls area and climbs through North Georgia mountain terrain, connecting waterfall scenery, forested grades, and the larger Appalachian Trail story. Many visitors hike only a portion, while backpackers may use it as the traditional lead-in to Springer Mountain. The climb, distance, and elevation gain require preparation, especially in warm weather or when carrying a loaded pack.
Before visiting, check state park and trail conditions, parking, weather, and shuttle or pickup logistics if not hiking out-and-back. Bring water, layers, sturdy footwear, and navigation, and be realistic about mileage and daylight.
Trail Notes
The Appalachian Approach Trail is a strenuous mountain route from Amicalola Falls toward Springer Mountain, with stairs, elevation gain, and remote sections. Carry more water and layers than you think you need, start early, and make sure your group is prepared for a real mountain hike rather than a short park walk.
Always leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it out.
Stay on the marked trail, tell someone where you're going, pack safety and wayfinding essentials, and do not rely only on a mobile phone to find your way. Practice good trail etiquette, yield appropriately on shared-use trails, and check the trailhead kiosk, official maps, park office, or ranger office for notices about changed routes, closures, safety information, fees, and restrictions before you go.
