Family or Group Day Trips
| Altamaha Wilderness Outposts |
| Description: Where the semi-tropical Georgia Coast lays relativiely undisturbed, the Altamaha River meets the Ocean. With mild winters, paddling in the Altamaha River Bioreserve is perfect for camping or day trips during "all seasons".
Vast tracts of land, barrier marsh islands and swamps are protected by the federal and state gov'ts as well as the Nature Conservancy, corporate and private citizens. These combined areas are referred to as the Altamaha River BioReserve.
Paddling through this wilderness area includes the Lewis Island Natural Area, a tidal swamp with old growth cypress, Wolf Island Wilderness Area, Blackbeard Island Wilderness Area as well as the offshore Queen Island and Sapelo Island. Cathead Creek displays the transition from Tidal Swamp to Marsh in an easy half-day paddle.
The sheer diversity of flora and fauna in the Bioreserve allows the visitor a variety of experiences and possibilities for wildlife sightings including dolphins, otter, wood storks, osprey, bald eagles, many shore birds, raccoons, sea turtles and the top predator - the American Alligator. Paddling through the wilderness areas on the Altamaha River, the tidal swamp and coastal marsh as day trips or as extended camping trip are available as guided and self-guided.
Over 100 miles of protected River corridor upstream ends at Wolf Island, a vast marsh island looking out onto the Atlantic Ocean. Great fishing! |
| Services: Canoe and Kayak trips starting over 100 miles upstream of Darien on the Altamaha River as well as trips out to Sapelo, Blackbeard and Queen Island are available year round through Altamaha Coastal Tours. |

| Sea Kayak Georgia |
| Description: Since our beginning, Sea Kayak Georgia has sought to offer the highest quality of adventure travel and experiential education. Our emphasis is on skills development and responsible enjoyment of the coastal wilderness. Many of our guides are professional naturalists. All are well versed in the natural and cultural history of our coast. Our kayaking instructors are certified by the American Canoe Association, the British Canoe Union, or both.
Stunning, pristine waterways, white sand beaches, and moss hung maritime forests are the hallmarks of Georgia's wild and lonely Barrier Islands. Ten of Georgia's 13 barrier islands are protected wilderness, separated from the mainland by miles of tidal marsh, rivers, creeks, and lesser islands. Our wild inhabitants include bottle nosed dolphins, loggerhead and leatherback turtles, and an astounding variety of bird life. And because Georgia's winters are so mild, the coast can be explored year round.
Our expertise ranges from day trips to customized expeditions to professional instruction. |
| Services: Our day trips give you a satisfying taste of Georgia's coastal wilderness, meandering through the tidal marshes and exploring beaches accessible only by Canoe or Kayak. Our multiple-day trips take you straight into the heart of the barrier islands. We offer wilderness camping for those who want to enjoy delicious camp food and sleeping under the stars; Bed and Breakfast trips are available for those who are in the mood to play all day, and enjoy a hot shower, gourmet food, and a comfortable bed at night. We also offer custom trips to Maine & Wales.
Our instruction program is extensive. We teach a full range of American Canoe Association Courses including Introduction to Kayaking, Kayaking Safety and Rescue, Flat Water Kayaking, Open Water Kayaking, Expedition Leader Endorsement Workshop, Eskimo Rolling, Instructor Development Workshop, and the Instructor Certification Examination. We can also design custom courses for developing specific skills.
